How it Works
ShazzleMail is a software application that can run on either stand alone
small computer called a plug, or on any Linux or Windows XP and higher
computer. A Smartphone option will be available this summer.
Shazzle is free, and allows you to send secure email to anyone in your
contacts list with no password required, and also allows you to send very
large files up to a gig or more (provided your email client supports this -
For Outlook users we have an Outlook plug-in that will support large file
exchange).
Shazzle creates a direct e-connection from sender to receiver, bypassing
outside hosts and cloud services to insure that your communications are
always private and secure. In the most simple use case a Shazzle sender
creates a message for or wishes to share files with a Shazzle receiver. The
Shazzle service finds the internet location of the receiver and establishes
an instant private network through a direct connection between the parties.
In other cases a Shazzle sender may create a message for a receiver not in
the Shazzle network. There is no need for the receiver to join the network.
Instead the Shazzle service sends them a web notification email with a link.
The receiver need only click the link to establish a direct connection with
the Sender and so receive the material. Shazzle sends sends all
communications over a secure line, and keeps mail on your local storage
device and not in someone else's cloud.
Shazzle turns your hardware of choice into a mail server. We provide a web
interface which allows you to open and administer user accounts on your
Shazzle device. Find this on our web site and log in using your user name
and password. You may use any client that supports POP/SMTP interface on
your computer, tablet, or smart phone.
If you install Shazzle on a network with a firewall it requires port
mapping. If the router is UPnP enabled (Universal Plug & Play), mapping will
be done automatically. Otherwise it needs to be done manually. Your router's
instruction manual will cover port mapping procedures. You can also find
port mapping information on our web site.
For hardware choices, the Plug computer is a perfect low energy solution for
an individual or small group to use in the home or office. It connects to a
router and can use a USB 2 drive for external storage.
A desktop is also a good solution. The operating system must be set to stay
'always-on' and not go into sleep mode since the hardware will function as a
mail server.
